Close to Whitby and the Yorkshire coast in the pretty village of Sleights, this charming cottage has beautiful original features and a wood burner for those chilly evenings. It’s an ideal destination for families and friends, with an enclosed garden for a couple of four-pawed companions to enjoy, too.
Traditional beams and exposed brickwork set the scene for this welcoming and comfortable period property. At its heart is the inglenook fireplace in the lounge, inset with a wood burner and where you’ll also see the remnants of a cast-iron bread oven. Gather around here in the evenings, and perhaps play a few tunes on the electric organ. Double doors lead to the dining room, where the table is placed to overlook the garden. The kitchen combines old and new in the form of a range cooker set into a brick chimney breast, surrounded by cupboards and all the modern appliances and equipment you’ll need. Head upstairs, where the king-size bedroom has an en-suite WC and shares a bright family bathroom with the double, twin and single bedrooms. For fresh air, al fresco dining and rural views, the back garden has a large patio with steps leading down to a lawn.
The popular village of Sleights (it rhymes with ‘nights’) has some lovely shops and a dog-friendly pub, and there are scenic walks in the beautiful Esk Valley all around. The seaside town of Whitby is just 4 miles away, and if you don’t want to take the car your mutts travel free on the Usk Valley line, which runs from one end of the village. In Whitby you can all stretch your legs on the beaches, climb the 199 steps to St Mary’s Church, wander the atmospheric ruins of the abbey or take a scenic clifftop walk along the Cleveland Way.
